The Texas-South Korea Trade Coalition is comprised of Texas companies, industry organizations, trade associations, and local chambers that strongly support trade with South Korea and the passing of the currently pending US-Korea Fair Trade Agreement (KORUS). The Free Trade Alliance (Alliance) serves as the Secretariat of the Coalition for the state of Texas.
The U.S.-South Korea Fair Trade Agreement was signed by the United States and Korean governments on June 30, 2007. The most commercially significant U.S. trade deal in more than a decade, the Agreement will bring important economic benefits and opportunities to U.S. businesses, farmers, and workers by immediately opening new access for U.S. goods and services in South Korea—one of the world's largest and most dynamic economies.
The US-Korea Fair Trade Agreement is beneficial to our country and will bring vital business to the state of Texas. Texas business relies heavily on world markets with the state exporting $5.6 billion in goods to South Korea in 2007and $5.2 billion in goods in 2008. Texas led the country in manufactured goods exports in 2008 with shipments totaling $192.14 billion, a 14% increase from 2007. Sectors that will benefit from the liberalized trade are technology, auto/machinery, medical, and chemical. Manufactured goods will especially benefit because nearly one fourth of manufacturing workers in Texas depend on the export market for their jobs. Reduced tariffs make Texas products more affordable to Korean businesses and consumers, creating a level playing field for Texas goods and services.
By securing a more open and competitive Korean market, the trade agreement will boost Texas exports to and bilateral investment with, South Korea—generating new jobs and economic growth. By deepening our two countries' economic links, the agreement will bring new energy and vitality to the overall U.S.-South Korea partnership—an alliance critical to regional and global security.
